Death of Ayrton Senna : ウィキペディア英語版 | Death of Ayrton Senna
Three-time Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna died on 1 May 1994, as a result of his car crashing into a concrete barrier while he was leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Italy. The previous day, Roland Ratzenberger had died when his car crashed during qualification for the race. His and Senna's accidents were the worst of several accidents that took place that weekend and were the first fatal accidents to occur during a Formula One race meeting in twelve years. They became a turning point in the safety of Formula One, prompting the implementation of new safety measures and the Grand Prix Drivers' Association to be re-established. ==Background== Senna left his longtime ride at McLaren to join Williams for 1994, replacing Alain Prost alongside Damon Hill. Williams was expected to again contend for the F1 world championship, as they had in the previous two seasons with Prost and Nigel Mansell at the helm of the car the three time champion was now driving. As he switched teams, Senna also was switching engines. Williams cars at the time were powered by Renault, which Senna had not driven since he was with Lotus in 1986. Senna had been used to Honda power, having raced with the Japanese automaker's engines from 1987 to 1992, and thus there was somewhat of a struggle getting used to the new setup. Senna commented on the FW16 during Estoril testing at the start of 1994: The problems continued as the season opened. Senna had had his worst ever start to a Formula One season, failing to finish or score points in the Brazilian or Pacific Grands Prix, despite having taken pole in both. Benetton's Michael Schumacher was the championship leader entering the race at Imola, with Senna trailing by twenty points.
